Dr. Katie Mckinnon
Chadburn Clinical Lecturer
Dr. Mckinnon is a neonatal subspecialty doctor in the London School of Paediatrics, and a Chadburn Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London supervised by Professor Chiara Nosarti and Dr. Divyangana Rakesh. Her research investigates how socioeconomic and environmental adversity interacts with medical vulnerabilities, in particular preterm birth, to impact neurodevelopment, physical health, mental health, and educational achievement.
Dr. Mckinnon completed her PhD at the University of Edinburgh with Professor James Boardman and Dr. Hilary Richardson. She investigated the relationship between preterm birth, socioeconomic status, and neurodevelopment, using brain MRI metrics across early childhood. Her broader research has focused on neonatal neurodevelopment, neuroimaging, and outcome prediction for children born preterm, and those with neonatal encephalopathy or congenital brain abnormalities.
She is part of several national clinical research groups, including the British Association for Neonatal Neurodevelopmental Follow-Up (BANNFU), the Research, Evaluation, and Audit for Child Health (REACH) Network, and NeoTRIPs. She has received prizes including the Postgraduate Rising Star Award from the Women in Neuroscience UK 2024.
Dr. Mckinnon undertook her undergraduate medical training at the University of Oxford and University College London. She is currently working clinically as a neonatal doctor in tertiary neonatal units across London.
